URGENT HELP NEEDED for MICHAEL CAMPBELL

2008 CPT REPORT
The Council of Europe Committee for the Prevention of Torture (CPT), inspected the Lukiskes Remand Prison in Vilnius in 2008 and found the conditions there to be "totally unacceptable" read full report here

Prison cell overcrowding was described as at times to an "outrageous deree" with up to six prisoners to a cell. "Conditions had deteriorated to the extent that they could be described as deplorable (dilapidated cells and furnishings, poor ventilation, etc.)." Cells were described as dirty and cold.

Further, "In the CPT’s opinion, the cumulative effect of overcrowding and poor material conditions (to which must be added the lack of a programme of out-of cell activities) could be considered to be inhuman and degrading, especially when persons are being held under such conditions for prolonged periods (i.e. up to several months)."

Complaints of physical and verbal abuse by guards, and suicides at the remand facility, are also alarmingly high.

TRIAL UPDATES

Reuters photo

Aug. 19 2009

The trial in Lithuania of Irish citizen Michael Campbell has commenced, only to have bail refused and his trial adjourned until October.  Meanwhile, Michael is still being held under grossly inhumane conditions with no visits allowed from family, and contact with the outside, including phone calls and mail, being withheld.

The adjournment of his trial to October makes 21 months that Michael will have been held without trial - a flagrant contravention of Lithuania's own laws which bar internment without trial after 18 months.

Meanwhile, Lithuanian officials have begun extradition proceedings and issued arrest warrants for three more Irish citizens -- Seamus McGreevy, Brendan McGuigan, and Michael's brother Liam Campbell -- while no evidence suggests any were ever actually in Lithuania. Liam Campbell is currently held in Maghaberry jail after being detained

Irish POW suffering in Lithuanian jail – PLEASE ACT TODAY

Irish Free State citizen Michael Campbell, age 35, brother of Irish republican ex-POW Liam Campbell, has been held for over a year without charge in Lukiskiu Prison in Vilnius, Lithuania; under hellish conditions. During this entire time he has had no contact, other than a few letters, with his family and loved ones; or with anyone except his lawyers. Worse yet, the conditions he is held in are truly appalling.

Please, take a moment to write a letter, send an email or personally visit the Lithuanian consulate in your area, to express your grave concerns for unwarranted mental and physical cruelty to the Irish man.

Attached are a list of Lithuanian embassies in the US and Mexico, along with a brief sample suggested letter. Feel free to alter and use your own words to suit your argument on his behalf. And please, forward widely.

We appreciate hearing about the feedback you receive - please keep in

===SAMPLE LETTER ===

To: CONSULATE GENERAL OF THE REPUBLIC OF LITHUANIA
(Atach your local consulate address here – see below list for info)

To whom it may concern,

I am writing today to address an appalling and unwarranted abuse of
human rights in one of your prisons, to an Irish man who has been held
there by your government on no charges for the past nine months.

I understand that Michael Campbell is being held with no contact
whatsoever with any of his family and loved ones, other than a few
letter home. In this age where phone use is ubiquitous, it seems
inhumane to not at least allow phone contact in the past nine months.
Furthermore, it is cruel to not allow a family visit over nine entire
months. I am aware that a family member who traveled a great distance
to be at one of Michael's court appearances was removed from the court
room and not allowed see Michael.

To continue, I am alarmed to learn of the conditions in Michael's jail
cell. I am told he is being held in a cell with three others; none of
whom speak English. These prisoners spend their day smoking drugs,
and Michael is forced to strain his head at a broken window to get
fresh air. He is not allowed access to proper sanitation and is using
an open hole in the ground. His food is inedible. I call these
conditions appalling.

Please see that this situation, perhaps until now unknown to you,
receives your immediate attention. At the very least, please act to
ensure Michael receives a long-overdue visit with his family.

The favor of a response is requested.

Yours sincerely,

(YOUR NAME/ADDRESS)
